SLT / YAG Laser Capsulotomy

SLT (Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty) laser is advanced glaucoma treatment to decrease the need for glaucoma eye drops or as an alternative therapy. It reduces the intraocular pressures by selectively widening the drainage system in the eye. Generally two treatments of SLT laser are required per eye, however every patients treatment is different.

YAG Laser Capsulotomy Laser is usually for post cataract capsule opacity and may be required to clear scarring which develops behind the intraocular lens implant. This often develops over time after the cataract surgery. The laser itself usually takes between ten to fifteen minutes and is done in the consulting rooms. After treatment the patient’s vision will be blurry for a few hours.  Following that, the vision in the treated eye should increase over the later weeks.

Normal daily activities are fine to start the day after the laser. The eye should settle over the following days; however it is normal for the eye to feel irritated and scratchy at first.

If the eye has persistent severe pain following treatment or if the vision deteriorates, please contact Central Lakes Eye Clinic immediately on 54 323 479 or if after hours present to the emergency department at the closest hospital, as there is a small risk of inflammation, increased eye pressure, or retinal detachment and lens dislocation (with capsulotomy) for example.
